Day 1: USA - Beijing

Sit back and relax on your fligh to Beijing.

 

Day 2: Beijing

Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.

 

Day 3: Beijing

This morning, tour the Forbidden City, a huge complex of palaces, pavilions, and courtyards and walk through nearby Tian’anmen Square, site of history-making events. After lunch, visit the lush grounds of the Summer Palace. A performance of the renowned Beijing Opera will highlight your evening, the perfect way to end your day. (B, L, D)

 

Day 4: Beijing

A must see to all visitors to China, a full-day excursion takes you 40 miles north of Beijing to the Great Wall, an extraordinary 4,000-mile-long fortification built to hold back barbarian invaders. A walk along the wall is a not-to-be-missed experience. In the afternoon, a short drive along a statue-lined road leads you to the Ming Tombs. This still only partially excavated site is revealing fascinating insights into the lives of China’s past emperors. As a special treat tonight, enjoy a delicious Peking Duck dinner – Beijing’s famous speciality, and a fitting end to an unforgettable day. (B, L, D)

Day 6: Xi’an

Today, tour one of the world's greatest archeological treasures, the mausoleum of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (259-210 B.C.), the first emperor to unify China. See his thousands of life-size terra cotta soldiers and their horses, standing in formation. Your sightseeing continues to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Bell Tower. This evening, enjoy a dinner feast featuring the food and entertainment typical of the Tang Dynasty. (B, L, D)

 

Day 7: Xi’an - Chengdu

A morning flight takes you to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, famous for its hot spicy food. This afternoon, delight in a visit to a Panda Reserve. (B, L, D)

 

Day 8: Chengdu - Lhasa

Fly to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and “Roof of the World” at more than 10,000 feet above sea level. The remaider of the afternoon is at leisure to allow you to adjust the altitude. This evening, meet a local Tibetan family.

Day 9: Lhasa

Your morning tour of Lhasa features the busy Jokhang Temple, and Barkh, or Market. In the afternoon visit the Tibetan Museums. Tonight enjoy a Tibetan Dinner with folkloric entertainment. (B, L, D)

Day 10: Lhasa

Today’s tour of the incredible Potala Palace is the highlight of your visit to Lhasa. Designated as World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this amazing complex is a treasure trove of Tibetian art and architecture. After lunch, visit the Buddhist monks of the Sera Monastery. (B, L, D)

 

Day 11: Lhasa - Chengdu - Chongqing - Yangtze Cruise

Your morning flight will take you to the mountain-city of Chongqing as your gateway city to explore the second longest river in the world, the Yangtze. This evening, board your Viking River Cruise ship. (B, L, D)

Day 12: Yangtze - Cruise

Begin your cruise journey by visiting the ghost-city of Fengdu, with its line of houses believed to be haunted by silent ghosts and devils. In the afternoon arrive at Wushan, the entryway to Sichuan Province. (B, L, D)

 

Day 13: Yangtze Cruise - Two Gorges - Lesser Three Gorges

Experience the highlight of your river journey today by cruising the world-famous Three Gorges. Continue by a riverboat up the Daning River through the enchanting Three Lesser Gorges. In the late afternoon sail to Wu Gorge, second of the three main gorges, noted for its stunning Twelve Peaks. (B, L, D)  

 

Day 14: Yangtze Cruise - Three Gorges - Dam - Yichang - Shanghai

Your cruise continues through Xiling, largest of the Gorges, before arriving at the Three Gorges Dam for a visit. Descend through the  locks of the massive Gezhouba Dam for Yichang, where upon arrival you will be transferring to the airport for your flight to Shanghai, the “Paris of the East”. (B, L, D)

 

Day 15: Shanghai

Your morning tour features a visit to the Bund, the waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River, the Old Town and the serene Yu Yuan Gardens. After lunch, stop at the Children’s Palace, where talented students study dance, music, and mathematics. This evening, be amazed by a performance of the fabulous Shanghai Acrobats. (B, L, D)

 

Day 16: Shanghai - Suzhou

Enjoy a full day excursion to Suzhou, an ancient city and center of culture and history. Travel to the charming city of Tongli, then continue by boat to Suzhou via the Grand Canal. In Suzhou visit the Embroidery Institute to see artists at work. return in the early evening to Shanghai. (B, L, D)

 

Day 17: Shanghai - USA

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the USA. (B)
